Basketball

Rising courtside talent with growing regional presence and ambition.

THE STORY

Basketball is South Sudan's fastest-rising sport. The senior national team — Bright Stars — qualified for back-to-back FIBA World Cups and made the country's Olympic basketball debut in Paris 2024.

Behind the headlines is a grassroots story: outdoor courts in Juba and Yei full at sunrise, school leagues expanding into the states, and a generation of players who see a real path from local court to global stage.

The federation focuses on building permanent indoor facilities, certifying referees, and supporting women's basketball programs that have historically been underfunded.
